Iron Hill Museum, Newark, De

Cataloguing a Small but Diverse Collection

Art Conservation undergraduate students at the University of Delaware assisted the nearby Iron Hill Museum in preparation for their move to a new facility. Then operated out of a former historic African American School House, the museum had a rapidly growing collection that quickly overwhelmed any attempt by the small staff to catalogue its holdings. As volunteers, university students catalogued, labeled, assessed the condition of, cleaned, and arranged geological, ethnographic, and archeaological objects for storage and display. Among the most challenging objects to work with were a collection of taxidermic specimens cured with arsenic. The health risks posed by these objects were considered for both the aspiring conservators and museum guests.
