Treatment performed at: Winterthur Museum

Overseen by Conservator: Joyce Hill Stoner and Mirjam Hintz

Early twentieth-century copy of a Charles Wilson Peale portrait severely damaged by fire while hanging in the Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware; required removal of charred debris, surface cleaning with Shellsol D60, consolidation with 15% Aquazol 500 in ethanol, tacking down with a hot spatula, application of varnish, and inpainting with Golden PVA paints

I contributed to two stages of this treatment: the removal of charred debris from the surface
with a scalpel and the final inpainting.  The condition report and treatment report below
were written by Melissa King and Mirjam
Hintz, respectively. I have also included a link
to news coverage of the fire.
