James Hinson War Diary

 1864-5 Ms. 82

Treatment performed at: The Charleston Library Society Book Conservation Studio

Overseen by Conservator: Brien Beidler

Civil War era, cloth and leather bound diary belonging to a confederate soldier, fate unknown, preserved with a specially made clam-shell box

While I performed no treatment on the diary itself, I was given one-on-one invaluable instruction on the construction of clam-shell boxes with linen exteriors and lined paper interiors. This construction consists of two trays that fit snuggly into each other with a board cover that mimics the appearance of a hardcover volume. The label affixed to the spine of the box is hand gilded into leather with 10-point Kwik Print type, the leather thinned with a Scarf-fix tool.
